The summer weather is starting to heat up and if you’re not careful, your body can be negatively impacted. There are some important things to know about the risks of exposing yourself to high heat and take steps to protect your health. Here are some ways you can stay healthy during the hot summer days.

#1: Know your body temps.
Your body regulates itself to around 98.6 degrees, and even changes as little as a degree could start changing the overall biochemistry of your body that you might be able to feel right away. If you’re continually walking around with a higher than normal body temperature, you could be risking heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

#2: Stay hydrated.
Warm weather means you will likely be sweating and if you’re sweating out water but not drinking water to replace it, your body won’t be getting enough electrolytes. This can cause muscle cramping and dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, so you can replenish what you’re losing in the heat.

#3: Know the signs of heat exhaustion.
Heat exhaustion happens when you’ve lost enough body fluid that your body cannot operate properly. You’ll feel excessively thirsty, dizzy, and very tired. In some cases, nausea will set in and you may lose more fluid that way. If that is the case, you need to seek medical attention right away and move into a cooler location, while applying cool, wet towels and ice. If you ignore these signs, you could lose consciousness and heat stroke could happen. This is very serious and could be fatal if not treated immediately.

#4: Get a good air conditioning system in place.
Summer in the Pacific Northwest is a beautiful time, but it does get hot. It’s important to have a place to stay cool and comfortable. If your air conditioning system at home does not keep you reliably cool, get it looked at by our team at Hybrid Heating and Air Conditioning. It may need a simple repair. Perhaps your system is old and inefficient and now is the time to get a full replacement. We have a variety of options available in your budget and can work with you on getting financing in place, so you can stay comfortable throughout the summer months. Contact us today for information!

The official start of summer is June 21 and before you know it, we’ll be heading toward the warm, hot days of summer in the Northwest. You’ll likely be adjusting your thermostat to turn your air conditioner on each day. Have you used your air conditioner already and noticed that there have been some weird sounds? Or perhaps nothing is amiss, but you’re looking to keep your air conditioning working at peak condition, so you can avoid any unnecessary break downs. Here are some ways to avoid surprise air conditioner break downs.

#1: Schedule preventative maintenance.
The end of spring is near, and summer will be here soon. This is the perfect time to get your cooling system tuned up. Our experienced HVAC technicians will come out and take a close look at both the outside and inside of your air conditioning system and make sure there are no components that are starting to wear out. If we notice any adjustments that need to be made or if there is anything that needs repair or replacement, we’ll let you know so you can get it serviced before we’re hitting hot temperatures. We’ll also clean the inside, including the blower motor and coils!

#2: Keep your filters cleaned.
Clogged filters not only affect your indoor air quality, but it means that your air conditioner must work hard to do its job. Over time this causes unnecessary wear and tear on the system and it could cause premature break downs. Set a calendar reminder to clean and/or replace your air filters every other month at the minimum. Your system (and your checking account) will thank you because you will decrease your risk for expensive, unexpected repairs.

Your air conditioner isn’t meant to last forever, but it will work well for a long time if you take good care of it. Regular cleaning and preventative maintenance appointments will give you the peace of mind you need knowing that your system will keep you cool and comfortable for many summers! Contact us today to set up a maintenance appointment or to talk to us about your options about getting a new air conditioner or ductless heat pump installed in time for the 2018 summer season!

Spring has officially arrived this week! With the change of season, it’s important to remember to prepare your HVAC system for the weather and extended use during spring. Here are some specific ways you can prepare your HVAC system for spring.

Tip #1: Remove debris around your outdoor unit.
Winter weather in the Northwest translates to a lot of rain, mud, and wind. These last months of winter weather cause build up to happen around your outdoor condenser unit and if it isn’t cleared away, it could restrict airflow and cause problems with overall functionality. If this happens, the machine has to work harder to do its job and this could mean your energy bill could be higher and the system could break down unnecessarily.

Tip #2: Clean and/or replace your filters.
In order to promote good indoor air quality, it’s important to remember to clean or change your air filter every other month. Pet dander, dust, and other debris accumulates inside the filter and this could cause your allergies to get worse and it can reduce airflow, causing your machine to work hard.

Tip #3: Replace and upgrade your home’s thermostat.
A programmable thermostat can change your life for the better. These kinds of thermostats can help you save money and will better regulate air flow at all hours of the day and night. Programmable thermostats give you the option to designate your desired temperature and set it to run at the time you want it to. Gone during the day at work? Program it to turn off or down when you’re away from home, then program it to turn on shortly before you arrive so your home is at a comfortable temperature. This kind of flexibility in programming translates a savings in your utility bill.

Tip #4: Schedule a preventative maintenance appointment.
Spring in the Northwest is beautiful and we have sunnier weather and longer days! The change to springtime weather is the ideal time to schedule your preventative maintenance appointment with our specialists at Hybrid Heating and Air Conditioning. Our experienced HVAC technicians will clean your filters, check to make sure all the components inside your HVAC system are working as they’re supposed to, and we’ll talk to you about any potential issues we find that need to be fixed. Having an unexpected system breakdown can be a real headache. Preventative maintenance appointments can help eliminate that problem and keep you comfortable all season long.

Don’t neglect your HVAC system well this spring. Contact us today for information on getting a preventative maintenance appointment set up. Or, if your system is outdated and unreliable, spring is a great time to get it replaced. We can help find a system that works perfectly for your home’s specific layout and most importantly, we will work with your budget. We look forward to hearing from you!

Keeping your HVAC system working all the time is important, so implementing some good habits when it comes to HVAC maintenance can help you stay comfortable and save money, all year long. Here are some HVAC habits you should have.

Habit #1: Cleaning and/or changing air filters.
This is one of the most important (and easiest) things you can do to maintain the life of your system. Dirt, dander, and dust will accumulate in the filter over time, especially if you have pets.  Once this accumulates, it is hard for the air to pass through and the air quality will not be as good. Dirty filters also make your system work harder, which can translate to a higher energy bill and increased risk of a system break down. Make it a habit to clean and/or change your filter once a month, or once every other month.

Habit #2:  Don’t change your thermostat all the time.
Find a temperature that is comfortable and keep it there and use natural light to help with the temperature in the home. Adjusting your thermostat all the time can cause your system to work harder than necessary, and it will also cause your utility bill to fluctuate greatly. Take advantage of the warm sun to help heat rooms and during the summer to keep it cool, close curtains or blinds to block incoming heat from the sun.

Habit #3: Keep your system maintained yearly.
Annual HVAC maintenance tune-ups are very important. Just like you have your car tuned-up regularly, your HVAC system should also be kept maintained regularly. Preventative maintenance will help make sure that all the unseen components inside your machine are working efficiently and at their peak. Our technicians will be sure that there are no issues happening, so you don’t face an unexpected breakdown. We’ll clean your filters, run an energy efficiency check, and talk to you about anything else that you have questions with.

Spring is only two weeks away and our team at Hybrid Heating and Air Conditioning is ready to help you stay comfortable all season long! Contact us today for information on getting a new system installed for spring or for more information on preventative maintenance services.

This week, the Portland metro area will see record heat. Temperatures are expected to soar into the 100s, with some places reaching upwards of 110 degrees! With these kinds of temperatures, it’s important to take care of yourself and be sure to listen to any heat-related warnings. The United States Weather Service has issued an extreme heat advisory for our area, so it’s important to take note and find places to stay cool. Here are some extra tips on how to stay cool.

Tip #1: Know what your equipment expectations are.
When it comes to your air conditioning system, there are certain equipment expectations that we have to keep in mind. We have to design our systems per code for outdoor temperatures of 95 degrees. Systems are designed to maintain a 20-degree difference from indoors to the outdoors. So, at 95 degrees, it needs to maintain a comfortable 75 degrees indoors. At 107, it should be 87 indoors. If we designed systems to maintain 75 degrees inside and it was 107 outside, the systems would be oversized all of the other days of the year. Oversized equipment will stop and start constantly and will use a lot more electricity because of all of the starting and stopping.

Note: if you own a heat pump system, they are sized for heating capacity, which is most often oversized on the cooling side. This means that the heat pump can produce more cooling when needed on hot days like we’re having this week. That said, they can struggle to maintain 75 on a 107-degree day.

Tip #2: Stay hydrated.
It’s very important to drink plenty of water when the weather is hot. Even if you drink a lot of water on a regular basis, on hot days, increase your intake even more. Keeping plenty of fluids going means that your body can help keep itself cool and you’ll reduce your risk for developing heat stroke or another heat related illness/sickness. In addition, dress lightly – the lighter the clothing, the less sweat and loss of fluid there will be.

Tip #3: Keep your system serviced.
Your HVAC system is one of those things that you might forget about servicing regularly, but it’s in fact one of the most important things to keep maintained. The beginning of the spring or summer is a good time to get your system maintenance appointment set. That way, you’ll be sure that all of the inside components of the machine are working well and problem spots will be pointed out in plenty of time.

Is your air conditioning not reliable? Or maybe it’s time to install a brand new air conditioning system so you can avoid breakdowns when you need your system the most! Contact us today for options on the right equipment for your home or office and we’ll also let you know what rebates or other incentives are currently happening!

Owning a pet is a big job but it has many rewards. The unconditional love of a pet is unique and special! Taking care of your dog or cat means feeding them, cleaning them, and sometimes cleaning up messes. Pet ownership also requires some effort when it comes to your HVAC system and its maintenance. Here are some important must-knows for pet owners regarding HVAC maintenance.

Tip #1: Keep track of exposed wires.
Your cat or dog – especially kittens and puppies – might think exposed wires from your HVAC system are toys and play with it or start chewing.  To be sure that your pets are kept safe and your HVAC system wires are kept intact, keep all wires away from your pet’s reaches by enclosing them in conduits.

Tip #2: Keep your air filter clean.
The air filter in your system plays a huge role in the overall efficiency of the HVAC unit and also the quality of air that is circulated throughout your home. The hair that your dogs and cats shed can get inside the air filters and clog it, which could decrease the efficiency of your system. This means you’ll likely see an increase in utility bills and over time, it could shorten the lifespan of your heating and cooling system. Clean your air filters regularly, every one or two months.

Tip #3: Keep the outside condenser units safe.
If your dog or cat has free range of the yard where your outside unit is located, be careful to watch the outside condenser units closely. It’s common for dogs to dig and claw at harder surfaces and they could start wreaking havoc on the condenser coils. This could not only damage the machine, but it could also cause significant damage to your pet and their sensitive feet. In addition, if your dog has access to urinate on the machine’s coils, this could cause them to erode over time. To prevent access to the machine, you can put a small barrier around it to help limit your pet’s access to it.

If it’s time to get your heating and cooling system tuned up, repaired, or replaced, contact our professional and experienced team! We’re ready to help you get the answers you need in the price range you can afford.
