Renovating a home can be an exciting and exhausting process. A home renovation can give homeowners the home they want without having to move and for most people, it allows them to make the changes they want within the budget they determine. If you are considering renovating your home, don’t forget about your HVAC system. If it’s old and out of date, replacing it as part of your home remodeling project is a great idea. Be realistic about your renovation expectations, calculate your budget, and determine what things you want to complete first. Here are some other tips on including HVAC replacement in your home remodel.

Tip #1: Do you research on HVAC companies.
There are a lot of different companies out there, so it’s important to look closely at your options and do your research. Look first for what experience the company has and how long they’ve been in business. Ask them about what kind of jobs they do the most and ask them to provide information on recent jobs they’ve completed. Next, look online for positive reviews on Angie’s List, Yelp, Google, Facebook, and most importantly Better Business Bureau. If there are a lot of negative reviews, this should be a red flag, but  read thru them to see what the negative reviews are.  In addition, look to see what services the company offers. They should be able to provide a comprehensive list of services that includes not just installation of a new heating/cooling system, but one that does replacements, repairs, and regular preventative maintenance service appointments.

Tip #2: Determine which system is right for you.
Your new HVAC system is a key component of your home and it will be something you will rely on for many years to come, which means you can count on it to stay comfortable when you need it the most. New systems are also energy efficient and can help you save money over time. Not sure which system or system size is right for your home? Our HVAC professionals at Hybrid Heating & Air Conditioning will take a look at your home and its specific layout and suggest which system is right for you. Whether it’s a heat pump, ductless system, or gas furnace, we will make sure that you have options that work well with your home and most importantly, your budget.

Remodeling your home is a big job, so let us help with part of it! We will explain your choices and help you find a system that will give you the reliability you need. Summer is here and it is time for you to crank up the air conditioning when the weather starts to warm up! You should always be aware of how to protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning, but especially once you start using your cooling system more and more. Carbon monoxide is a gas that is odorless, tasteless, and colorless. It can be deadly to pets and humans.

Where does it leak from?
Carbon monoxide can come from a variety of sources including water heaters, boilers, gas appliances, and household furnaces. These leaks are hard to detect unless you have a working carbon monoxide detector and many times, you won’t know you have a leak until you start experiencing negative side effects of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Here’s how you can help protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Tip #1: Stop leaks before they start.
One of the best ways you can stop carbon monoxide leaks is by having your HVAC system inspected and tuned-up on a regular basis, at least once a year. These appointments will allow our experienced service technicians the opportunity to make sure everything is working at peak efficiency and we’ll also be able to diagnose any potential problems that might happen including any cracks or broken parts that could cause a leak. We will find it and repair it before anything leaks or breakdowns occur. This will not only save you money, but it will keep you and your family safe throughout each season of the year.

Tip #2: Install a quality carbon monoxide detector.
Having a quality carbon monoxide detector with sensor technology will help detect and record carbon monoxide levels. Talk to us about which detectors we recommend. Many of them come with warranties for several years so you know you’re covered. Once you have a detector installed, test the alarms monthly and make sure the batteries are working well. If you ever hear an alert coming from the machine and you have already replaced batteries recently, get outside quickly and call for help. Don’t go back inside unless you’ve been cleared to do so, in case there is a leak.

Tip #3: Know the symptoms.
The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are dizziness, nausea, headaches, weakness, confusion, and chest pain. Prolonged exposure could cause a loss of consciousness. If you think you’re experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning, get outside into fresh air right away and call 911 for medical attention.

Schedule an appointment for a tune-up and annual maintenance right away and if your home does not have a carbon monoxide alarm/detector, set up an installation appointment soon!

Gas furnaces are one of the most common types of heating systems found in homes around the Pacific Northwest. These furnaces keep individuals and families warm throughout the winter and are very energy efficient. As with any large appliance or heating unit, there are some important safety precautions you should take while using your gas furnace.

Tip #1: Make sure the vent pipes are free and clear with nothing touching them. We have seen bags, gloves, boxes, and many other things stacked on and near the vent pipes. This is a fire hazard! These pipes get hot and could potentially cause a fire when items are touching them.

Tip #2: Double check your carbon monoxide detector. Make sure the unit is still working and has not expired. These have a shelf life anywhere from two to seven years. If it has expired and is still working, replace immediately. Read the instructions carefully on the new one as many detectors have specific areas and heights they can be installed.

Tip #3: Always check your air filter and make sure it is clean. This not only keeps your unit up and running efficiently, but it will also allow for cleaner air to enter into your home.

Tip #4: Make sure that the front of the furnace has a 30-inch clearance in front of it, for service access and safety.

Tip #5:  Be sure that all supply and return air vents are free and clear and that the vents are open and not obstructed.

If you’re having difficulty getting your gas furnace to work with maximum efficiency, contact Hybrid today! Our team of professionals will have your furnace working well and your home will be warm in no time.
