Earth Day is next week! This day helps people remember the importance of our Earth and provides ways to help take care of it. We think that taking care of the Earth we live in is important and that being a good steward of the environment means many things – including thinking about your heating and cooling system! Make Earth Day every day in your home with some of these helpful tips.
#1: Replace your thermostat.
Programmable thermostats are an easy way to reduce your energy usage and save money! Not to mention, they will help you with evenly heating and cooling your home all year long. These thermostats allow you to program the temperature to be what you want, when you want it. For example, if you know you will be gone at work all day, don’t keep the thermostat cranked up. Program it to turn down a bit while you’re away, then have it turn back up shortly before you get home. Programmable thermostats can be used in tandem with almost any existing heating and cooling system. Contact us today for options.
#2: Stay ahead of the game with preventative maintenance.
Heating and cooling preventative maintenance appointments may not be on the top of your priority list, but they should be. These will help you extend the life of your system and they will help prevent unexpected breakdowns. Spring is one of the best times to get your system tuned up. We will make sure to run an energy efficiency check to ensure the system is working at peak condition. We will also clean the filters or replace them, then talk to you about any repairs or other issues we see that could cause a problem. Preventative maintenance gives you the peace of mind you need as you head into the spring and summer seasons.
Heating and cooling systems account for the highest energy use in most households nationwide. That means when it comes to helping the Earth, that you should look no further than your HVAC system! We can help get your preventative maintenance appointment on the books! Or, if you are ready to get a new heating and cooling system installed for the spring and summer weather, we can help find a replacement system that is the highest quality for the best price. Your air conditioner is a complex machine that is made of many different parts and it takes a combination of things to make it work efficiently. Hydrochloroflurocarbons (HCFCs) are chemicals that are used as refrigerants inside of your air conditioner and R-22 is the most commonly used HCFC refrigerant used. However, these chemicals are very bad for the environment and if they are released into the environment they can contribute to climate change and destruction of the Earth’s ozone layer.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency is now phasing out the use of R-22 and other chemicals that cause damage to the environment. As of 2020, no R-22 will be produced or imported. After that time, R-22 supplies will become more limited and servicing machines with this chemical could be more expensive.
What should you do?
First, make sure to stay on top of maintenance for your air conditioning unit. Preventative maintenance will ensure that there are no broken parts, but it will also ensure that there are no leaks that could be causing damage to the Earth.
Second, know that it’s not mandatory to stop using the system that uses R-22, but knowing that it is being phased out by 2020 will allow homeowners to replace this existing equipment and install new systems that are energy efficient and do not cause harm to the environment.
Third, if your system is decades old and it’s not reliable, chances are, it needs to be replaced at some point soon. Replacing it with a new energy efficient air conditioner will save money on energy costs and you’ll know you will be doing your part by utilizing a machine that doesn’t use harsh, harmful chemicals. New systems with the Energy Star® label can be approximately 14% more efficient than systems that do not have this marker. When you’re doing your research on new systems that are available, be sure to read what kind of refrigerant they use. There are a variety of alternative refrigerants such as R-410A that do not contribute to ozone depletion.
If you have questions about your current system and if it uses R-22 or not, we can help. We’ll take a look and advise you on how you should proceed. If a new system is needed, we’ll talk to you about which system is right for you and your home’s unique layout. Contact us today for a free appointment.
If you’re looking for a heating and cooling system that gets the job done well and is incredibly efficient, a geothermal heat pump is a one of the best options out there right now. Geothermal heating can be 50-70% more efficient and cooling can be 20 to 40% more resourceful than traditional air conditioning systems. This translates to huge savings for you on your energy bills. And, it’s better for the environment.
How does a geothermal heat pump work?
The main difference is that the system uses the constant temperature of the earth as the medium rather than the outside air temperature. Underneath the ground’s surface, there is a relatively continual temperature, so no matter what area you live in, whether it’s the rainy Pacific Northwest or the warm desert of Eastern Oregon, this heating and cooling option is reliable. The temperature underground is warmer than the air above it during the winter and cooler than the air in the summer. A geothermal heat pump will replace heat through a ground heat exchanger. This is an innovative and truly revolutionary system that first started in the 1940s and since then has developed to be more and more efficient.
What are the benefits of geothermal systems?
Geothermal systems are extremely quiet and usually don’t require a lot of maintenance but they can be expensive, as the installation is usually more involved. However, the upfront costs that you will pay for the system and installation will be returned to you later down the road, simply by the years of savings you’ll have on your energy and utility bills. The systems also last considerably longer than traditional heat pumps – it is estimated that the inside mechanisms can last 25 years and the ground loop can work efficiently for over 50 years.
Geothermal systems can help protect and conserve the environment’s natural resources by controlling indoor temperatures very efficiently, which means there will be lower toxic emissions. Geothermal units also help eradicate carbon dioxide use and because it doesn’t pull in outside air, the air inside has less allergens, pollutants, chemicals, or other harmful particles in the air.
These heating and cooling systems will likely work with existing ductwork in the home, but our professional team of installation specialists will look closely to see if everything is in place for that, or if any additional adjustments will need to be made. A geothermal unit is an investment that will reap huge financial rewards after time. If you want to keep your home comfortable throughout the year, contact us today to see how geothermal units can benefit you and your home today!
