3 Signs You Need a Heat Pump Replacement

heat pump replacement

If you have a heat pump in your home, you know how wonderful they are throughout the year! They will keep your home cool during the summer and warm in the cold months of winter. But, unfortunately they don’t come with a lifetime warranty! Over time and regular use, the machine will eventually wear out and you’ll need to think about getting it replaced. If you don’t want the heat pump to stop working in the middle of a cold autumn or winter day, pay attention to some of the signs that your machine may be failing. That way, you’ll be able to get it fixed and replaced quickly and efficiently. Here are some common signs that you need a heat pump replacement.

Sign #1: Your machine is being repaired often.
With regular use and proper maintenance, your heat pump shouldn’t need to be repaired more than every couple of years. However, if you have an older system, the wear and tear from the continued years of usage will likely mean that the parts will break down faster and more often. If you have had your heat pump repaired every few months, then it probably means that your system is on its way out and you should consider replacing it.

Sign #2: Your machine is old.
If your heat pump is more than 15 or 20 years old, it is had a long life of use and is probably past its prime. If the system is that old, it is probably working harder to accomplish the same results as a new machine would and you’ll probably see the main operating parts wearing out quickly and you may even notice that your utility bills are rising.

Sign #3: Your machine is noisy.

If your machine has been repaired but still makes groaning, rattling, or other mechanical sounds, this may mean that there is something bigger going on and that the pump will need a full heat pump replacement rather than a simple repair.

  1. Thank you for these tips on heat pump replacement! Our house and heat pump are older and we’ve had to call a repair service pretty frequently in the past couple of years. They machine has also been noisy every since we moved in. I think it sounds like we probably need a replacement. Do you know if a newer pump will give us better energy efficiency?

  2. Hi Eliza,
Yes, the new machines are very energy efficient. In fact, they may even end up saving you money down the long run on your utility bill. Give us a call for some options! We’re glad to help. Have a good day!

  3. This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that a heat pump older than fifteen or twenty years should be replaced. I’ve had my current system for around seventeen, and it’s starting to have some issues. Since it’s at the end of its lifespan anyway, I’ll definitely look into replacing it with a new heat pump instead of repairing it. Thanks for the great post!

  4. My machine has become really old and noisy. Thank you for reminding me that this is most likely because I need to replace the heat pump. I will make sure to get that done before winter. Thanks!
