What features are important when choosing an air conditioner?

Loving the sun? The blue sky and sunshine this week is getting many Pacific Northwest residents excited about the beautiful spring and summer days ahead. And guess what? Now is the time to start thinking ahead to having your air conditioning ready to go. Is it in good working order or do you need to have a reliable cooling system installed? Start the process now so you’re ready to go when the warm weather hits. Here are some helpful tips that will help you choose an air conditioner that’s right for your home and budget.

Tip #1: Sound levels are important.
Having a quiet air conditioning unit is a vital feature and it’s one of the most parts of enjoying your new system. Nobody wants to hear a loud, clanging unit that interferes with other things in your home! Noise level is also a big component for homeowners that live in town homes or condos, or those that have HOA rules. If you share a wall with neighbors you will need to have a system that operates quietly. Keep in mind, that a mid-level unit will be more efficient and will cost you less to operate over the long run.

Tip #2: Check energy ratings.
Air conditioning systems will use large amounts of energy – especially when they are used in the heat of summer. So, be sure you look for cooling systems that have great energy efficiency ratings. Research units that have high EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) numbers, as these will likely be the ones that are the most energy efficient. This means that you’ll save more on your cooling bill and you’ll minimize your negative impact on the environment!

Tip #3: Know what size you need.
Picking the correct size of your air conditioning system is critical for your comfort. For example, if you live in a large home, it may be a bit more challenging to cool and over-sizing could cause the lower level to be too cold. A properly sized unit with zoning options can remedy this.

  1. Though it’s different, I had a swamp cooler in one of my old college apartments. Those things are pretty loud, so I like having a much quieter A/C system. If I had to pick a system for my place, I wouldn’t know what I need. I see that’s important to know though, because eventually I’m going to have to put in a system when I move, or build a new house. Thanks for the info.
